This Welsh heavy metal band was originally called Jeff Killed John. They started their career by doing song covers of Metallica and Nirvana music! They recorded six songs that weren’t released, but two of them were reworked and released when they changed their name to Bullet For My Valentine. The current members of the group are Matthew Tuck (vocals/rhythm guitar), Michael Paget (lead guitar, backing vocals), Jamie Mathias (bass guitar, backing vocals), and Jason Bowld (drums).

1. The band had a successful debut in 2005

Bullet for My Valentine’s debut album, The Poison, was released on October 3, 2005, in the UK and debuted in the US on Valentine’s Day 2006. It was included on the Billboard 200 and was number 11 on the Independent Albums chart. It received a gold certification from RIAA after selling 500,000 copies in the US alone.

Some of the hit songs in the album are “Suffocating Under Words of Sorrow (What Can I Do),” “All These Things I Hate (Revolve Around Me),” and “Tears Don’t Fall.” After promoting the record, they performed in 2006 on the larger Download Festival Snickers stage.

2. They drew inspiration from other rock bands

Like other artists, Bullet for My Valentine was inspired by many rock bands like Def Leppard, Judas Priest, Pantera, Metallica, Iron Maiden, Nirvana, Queen, Led Zeppelin, and more. They inspired the band’s aggressive riffs and attractive melodies. Main lyricist Matt Tuck’s songwriting was inspired by other influences like Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, and Bob Seger, among others.

3. They used to follow the nu-metal trend

When the band was still known as Jeff Killed John, they followed the so-called nu-metal trend like Korn and Limp Bizkit. However, they reworked their musical strategy after changing their name to Bullet for My Valentine. The band’s music shifted to heavy metal leads, post-hardcore vocals, and some emo harmonies. Their music was inspired by combining punk metal and with ’80s metal bands styles.

4. They changed their writing style for Fever

The band also changed their writing style while working on their album, Fever. Before they wrote and recorded the instruments before writing the lyrics. They decided to write the lyrics along with the music in this album. It became a success upon its release on April 27, 2010, with its lead single, “Your Betrayal.”

5. They were accused of not being real metal

During an interview, Tuck revealed that the band was bothered after critics claimed they weren’t real metal. To prove them wrong, Bullet for My Valentine released their album Scream Aim Fire, to quiet this noise.

6. Famous Fans

On Nick Grimshaw’s Heart Rate Monitor series, Margot Robbie confessed to liking the band.  Nick then cut to the band who dedicated and played “Tears Don’t Fall” to Margot on the show!

7. Music or Rugby?

Matt Tuck’s original dream had nothing to do with music! He actually wanted to play rugby for Wales. He chose music over athletics when he turned 17, though later in life he second guessed himself. By the time Tuck was 23, he was still living with his parents and didn’t have any money of his own. Just before he decided to give-up, the group got a record deal!
